Most applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) [2, 4, 10, 19, 22, 24, 25] require long term (several months or even years of) unattended operation from their networks. But, significant challenges still remain in achieving longterm unattended operation from large-scale wireless sensor networks. Critical among those are the problems of power management. An important distinction between wireless sensor networks and most existing systems is the tremendous gap between the energy available to a sensor node and that required for its long-term unattended operation.
